Mountains cover about a quarter of the Earth’s land surface and are home to roughly 15% of the global population. However, their global impact extends far beyond their slopes. Often referred to as the world’s “water towers,” mountain regions provide freshwater for more than half of humanity, regulate our climate, and serve as sanctuaries for rare wildlife.
Yet, environmental reports and the UN’s 2030 Agenda highlight a stark reality: mountain ecosystems are incredibly fragile. Climate change, land degradation, and deforestation are threatening these vital landscapes at an alarming rate. When mountain environments suffer, the consequences ripple globally – from increased desertification to severe freshwater shortages in the lowlands.
This is exactly why initiatives like the European PeakED project are so essential today. By merging youth empowerment, green entrepreneurship, and environmental volunteering, we are learning how to build resilience within local mountain communities. Protecting our peaks is no longer just a regional challenge – it is a global necessity to ensure a stable, thriving future for generations to come.
