The PeakED project brings together partners from diverse geographical backgrounds. Environmental conservation takes on a deeper meaning when we look at the unique mountain ranges that inspire our daily efforts:
- Mount Olympus (Greece): Not just the mythical home of the Greek gods, Olympus is a global biosphere reserve boasting over 1,700 plant species, many of which are endemic. Protecting it means preserving Europe’s natural and cultural history.
- Rila Mountains (Bulgaria): Home to Musala (2,925 m), the highest peak in the Balkan Peninsula. Rila serves as a crucial “water tower” for the region, housing over 200 stunning glacial lakes.
- The Carpathians (Poland & neighboring countries): Stretching across Central and Eastern Europe, the Carpathians are the green lungs of the continent and a sanctuary for Europe’s largest populations of brown bears, wolves, and lynxes.
- Jabal Umm Ad Dami (Jordan): Located in the awe-inspiring Wadi Rum desert, this is Jordan’s highest peak (1,854 m). Its unique desert-mountain ecosystem relies on traditional Bedouin knowledge to combat desertification and manage precious water resources.
