From March 10 to 14, 2025, our partner organization Desert Bloom hosted the PeakED project in Jordan, where the dynamic “PeakED Living Lab” took place. The PeakED Workshop gathered both international and local participants to explore the potential for preserving mountain ecosystems through interaction with the cultural heritage of local populations.
The role of the Bedouins was crucial, as they generously shared their knowledge and traditions related to environmental protection and sustainability. During the workshop, a special emphasis was placed on the Women’s Cooperative Union Disi in Wadi Rum, where Bedouin women champion economic empowerment, the revival of traditional arts, and environmental restoration.
In a powerful hands-on activity, participants collaborated with local women to plant endangered native trees, such as Ghadha and wormwood, strengthening local efforts to combat desertification. Through this exchange of knowledge, the critical role of mountains in preserving water resources and medicinal plants was revealed.
What’s next? The Living Lab will transfer this invaluable knowledge to partner countries to implement sustainable initiatives in European mountain areas. These Living Labs will continue to provide opportunities for local residents and organizations to shape a greener future for their mountain regions!
